In a recent class, I asked participants to choose a core value from their hospital's mission statement (respect, compassion, justice, excellence and stewardship) and write about it, while remembering the excellent care they received during their journey with cancer. Survivor Joanne Grosso picked compassion and read her piece aloud.

I care about what you care about.

May I help you, what do you need from me?

May I share some of my experiences to help you?

Are you comfortable?

You are beautifully and wonderfully made.

Tell me what you would like to talk about.

May I sit silently with you?

May I pray with you for that concern?

Be good to yourself.

Feel those feelings then forgive yourself and others.

Allow others to be themselves.
