I started my day with a lovely verse from the Bible: Proverbs 17:22.
"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."
I am a highly spiritual person who delights in the power of words and beautiful phrases like this one on good medicine. To me, Creativity is being tapped on the shoulder by God, the God you know, love and define for yourself. Creativity is the Divine, the Divine is Creativity. When you choose your words and write them down, you are connecting to the great Creator within.
I invite you to pick a word or phrase that represents how you feel in this moment. Put pen to paper ... the physical act of writing (scribbling and doodling as I call it) becomes a form of meditation that connects you to your place of limitless possibilities, where creativity, wisdom and healing can occur. This process gets you out of your head and into your heart, to the truth of who you are. What you dream of and long for, even love for in this life is before you. Your hand is merely an extension of your intelligence, your emotions, your wisdom: you.
Please know the power of your words: they can enliven, mentor and inspire or break a spirit. Even if you do start with a word or phrase like "I feel anxious," or "sad" or "confused," write your word or phrase down twenty or thirty times until you begin to free associate. Keep your hand moving, up and down and across the page. It doesn't matter where you begin or where you end. Just keep going.
This is a chance to channel your energy and feelings onto the page. Any of life's challenges are an encounter with your deepest emotions; it is also an opportunity for you to know yourself better. As one patient put it: "Cancer is when you find out who you really are."
When you recognize the challenge before you, you can more easily turn it into a positive - a merry heart, not a broken spirit.
