The first four guided meditations can be found on the Create to Heal Mindfulness app, free to download on Google Play and iTunes App Store. Just search Create to Heal and the little blue bird icon will pop up! On the app, the angelic voice of Colleen Coleman guides you through four very simple yet powerful meditations. The first one introduces the basics if breath, the focus of all meditations. The second, third and fourth meditations are a progression taking you deeper and deeper into your creative process and healing.
These meditation scripts are offered here for your free download. The breath prayer can be printed out and used before you begin your practice. The Body Awareness Meditation is a bonus script written by Dr. Zappaterra, a pain management specialist.
These “Messages in the Moment” were originally used in a note-card series written and illustrated by Patricia Varga, to inspire people to think differently about themselves, their circumstances, and their surroundings. Whimsical but wise, these sayings are meant to give you a positive and needed message in the moment you receive it. Use these as creative writing prompts and see what you come up with!
Mandala is sanskrit for “circle.” In the Create to Heal program, we often use mandala art as a meditation and mindfulness tool. The patterns of a mandala engage your creativity; they require your presence and attention to detail in a way that is very centering, very calming.
These mandalas were created specifically for Women with Wings and the Create to Heal series of books by Justin “Apple” Murray, an exceptional artist based in Portland, OR who lost a family member to cancer. He channels his energy into these mandala templates—all you have to do is download and print. Colored fine tip pens or Derwent or Prismacolor water color pencils will help you create something powerful.
These inspirational quotes have been used in the Create to Heal program to jump start creative writing and to inspire the meditation process. Written by our founder Patricia Varga and participants from the Create to Heal program, these quotes are paired with Ebru art from Patricia’s studio. When faced with something as serious and life-threatening as cancer, chronic pain and other diseases, patients and family members dig deep into their experiences and write very profoundly … creating universal wisdom for all of us.
Over the years, I have witnessed the healing power of creativity and how the creative process uncovers and enhances the finest of human qualities: grace, courage, gratitude, strength and compassion— qualities we all possess.
The foreword to our second book, Create to Heal for Pain is written by Dr. Mauro Zappaterra, D, PhD, pain management specialist. Every living creature experiences pain and your pain is unique to you. Because pain is an experience, many factors influence that experience, increasing or decreasing its intensity. The pain experience can be modulated—turned up or turned down, as if you were adjusting the volume dial on the radio—by working with your emotions and your attention.
What good is gratitude? Gratitude has the power to heal, to energize and to change your emotions. When you are grateful, you experience more happiness and other positive feelings. By changing your emotions, you change your expression of pain, unhappiness, anxiety. Research also shows that grateful people are less depressed and more resilient to trauma. They believe that life is abundant, that life is a gift.
Pastor Harry Eberts from First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe introduced me to Sister Brita and her blessings. Harry first met Sister Brita at our Lady of the Pines Retreat Center in Findlay, Ohio. She is a member of Sisters of Mercy, an international community of Roman Catholic women who have vowed to serve people in poverty and sickness, with a special concern for women and children. Her blessings are very inspirational and contain great humanity and wisdom.
These messages are the result of patients and their caregivers / family members experiencing meditation, the color and motion of art, inspiring music and writing prompts used in our Create to Heal classes. These are for you to download, print and share!
